Chapter Seven

As soon as the doctor disappeared Nicki turned to Alex. “What was that cryptic remark all about?”

“She’s not fond of my clothing choices either. Do you want something to eat?”

She shook her head. “I need to see about my dad.”

“Then let’s go.” He picked up Leslie’s car keys.

As she followed him outside, Nicki tried to ignore the missing sense of intimacy that should have encased them. Alex seemed preoccupied. Was he regretting what had happened between them? Or was he merely upset over Vic’s arrest? The arrest must have come as a shock if the two of them were friends.

Surreptitiously, she studied Alex’s profile as he turned out onto Main Street. This was the first time she’d seen him with his face freshly shaved, his hair neatly combed, and dressed in something besides a T-shirt and jeans. His bad boy image had been dangerously sexy, but this new look turned him into a strikingly handsome man in a different, more commanding sort of way.

Why was he wasting his life hanging out with losers like Vic Unsdorf?

As she started to ask him that question once again, the building she had called home captured her full attention. She’d thought she was prepared for the sight. She’d been wrong. The destruction was much worse than she’d expected.

The entire front of her shop and the entrance leading to the apartments upstairs were nothing but rubble and gaping holes. None of the three shops in her building were open. The police had roped off the sidewalk between the two alleys, cutting off access to the area. The camera store had suffered extensive damage, while cracked and shattered windows marred the hair salon.

“Alex? Do you think they got Mrs. Coulton out okay?” Her elderly neighbor’s apartment centered over the camera store. The apartment over the hair salon had its own entrance, but those tenants must also have been terrified, if not injured, by the explosions.

“I’m sure they did. Leslie would have heard something if anyone had been hurt last night.”

“I suppose.”

His hand suddenly snagged hers. The remoteness faded, replaced by a tender expression of concern. “There was nothing you could have done about this, Nicki.”

“Except by not lying to the police in the first place?”

Alex tossed his head impatiently. “It’s too late for looking back. We need to figure out who is bent on getting rid of the witnesses.”

Did he know he’d said “we”? They drove past Matt’s street and she shuddered. Alex released her hand. As they neared the interstate, Nicki eyed the burned out shell of the Bide-Awhile Motel and decided Fools Point was starting to resemble a military zone.

“Technically, I’m not really a witness,” she muttered.

“The murderer has no way of knowing that.”

Nicki rubbed her face wearily. “I was stupid to lie to the police.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“But I hampered a murder investigation.”

“Right now, Nicki, that’s a minor issue.”

Alex resumed his silence, but she no longer sensed that impenetrable distance between them. Alex drove with single-minded purpose. He wasn’t at all bothered by the heavy traffic around them.
